  • Retreat time in the city

    SANFORD-It’s back to the Retreat table for city leaders. T he Sanford City Council will hold an additional haf day Retreat Wednesday to complete work and discussions on several items not completed in the initial Retreat.  The Law and Finance Committee will meet in regular session following the Retreat, where discussion will continue on a  mobile policing unit. On Thursday, city officials will meet with the Environmental Affairs Board at 5:15 P.M. in the west end n room of city hall to discuss issues related to hydrofracking.  The City Council’s  regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 at 7:00 P.M.    

  • Education Rebranding

    SANFORD-Much talk in the news lately about rebranding.  A local group comprised of educators, business leaders and the clergy have been meeting for several months as the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, building an educational strategic plan for  2013-17 for the Lee County Schools.  The vision of the group is the schools in partnership with the community.  During a recent meeting, Dr. Bud Marchant, Central Carolina Community College President, shared with the group a national report that shows the number of students entering four year colleges and universities who transfer back to  community colleges.  The article showed that about a third of the students make the […]

  • A happy farm secret

    SANFORD-Many residents are unaware of the Dew Dance Farm where animals are free to be be animals.  Laura Young, who owns the 26 acre farm with her husband, George, said they let the animals be what they are.  Llamas mingle with sheep, horses graze near goats and wild turkeys just strut about.  Laura said the farm grew out of her love for all animals.  In addition to the friendly animals, the Mcrae’s also grow seasonal vegetables and fruit.  She said nothing goes to waste.  What they don’t want, they sell or donate.  They don’t slaughter the animals for food.  Laura is also an […]

  • No ammonia for the water

    SANFORD-Beginning Thursday, employees of the city Public Works department will cease adding ammonia to customers’ water and will resume the addition of ammonia to the disinfection process Sunday, April 1, 2012.  Additionally, workers will not be flushing the water mains throughout the system during this time to remove sediment in the waterlines and refresh the entire distribution system.  With the changes in the disinfection process and flushing of the system, the public may notice a chlorine odor and/or discoloration to the water.

  • A silver alert has been cancelled for a Sanford man

    75 year old William Henry “Buddy” Parrish of Sanford was found safe in Liberty, N.C. early today after a Silver Alert had been issued late Monday.  Authorities said Parrish was last seen late Monday driving south on U.S. 421 near Liberty.  He was found  three miles from his pick-up which was parked along side the highway.  Authorities say no foul play is suspected.

  • Courthouse construction continues

    PITTSBORO-Taylor Hobbs of the firm working to restire the Chatham County Courthouse after it was destroyed by fire nearly two years ago, said it has been a long road but they are well on the way.   Hobbs said the rebuulding should be completed before Christmas  of this year, and if all goes well, the roofing will be done by summer.  Interior rebuilding has already begun with an eye to restoring the courthouse on how it looked in the early 1900s.   The new courthouse will have a greater emphasis on natural lighting, though overhead lamps will remain, and the outside will […]

  • Prom gowns are needed

    SANFORD-Spring is just around the corner when thoughts for many young lsdies turn to Milotary Balls and Proms.   Many times, the events are skipped because there is no suitable dress and no funds to to purchase.  Then, there’s also the “size” issue.  It’;s sometimes difficult to find a plus size gown.   Reba Brewington, an employee with the Lee County School System does not like that kind of talk.  She wants every young lady to experience the Prom and its wonderful highlights, so she and others work tirelessly to make it happen.
