Maryland Ready to Become Eighth State to Allow Same-Sex Marriage

(ANNAPOLIS, Md.) — Maryland is on the verge of becoming the latest state to legalize same-sex marriage. On Thursday, the Maryland state Senate voted 25 to 22 to allow gay and lesbian nuptials, coming on the heels of the House of Delegates passing a similar measure by a 72 to 67 vote. It’s guaranteed to become law since Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley has promised to sign the bill when it reaches his desk. However, just as in Washington state, which recently passed same-sex marriage legislation, homosexuals may have to wait until November to go to the altar if opponents of […]

Alabama Cops Claim Grandma, Mom Ran 9-Year-Old Girl to Death

(GADSDEN, Ala.) — In what prosecutors are describing as a horrific case of child abuse, two women are facing murder charges in the death of a 9-year-old who authorities say was ordered to run for three hours until she collapsed. Savannah Hardin became so dehydrated after running last Friday, according to police in Gadsden, Ala., that she had a seizure and died a few days later. The little girl was allegedly being punished by her grandmother, 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard, and her mom, 27-year-old Jessica Mae Hardin, for having lied about stealing some candy. It’s unclear to prosecutors whether Savannah […]

Vince Gill Parts Ways with Longtime Label

It was an ironic moment when Vince Gill appeared at Universal Music Group’s big show Wednesday at the Country Radio Seminar since Vince’s latest album, Guitar Slinger, is his last for Universal’s MCA label after more than two decades with the company.   Explaining he was there simply as a “thank you” to radio, Vince went on to say, “For the first time in 30 years, I don’t have a record label,” adding, “Don’t know that I want one.”  Vince thanked his family at MCA for a “sweet ride the last 23 years,” before performing a song from Guitar Slinger, […]

Justin Moore Caught Up in "Linsanity"

With a tweet and a picture, Justin Moore made it clear that he’s not immune to “Linsanity” — the craze touched off the Cinderella story of the emergence of New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin who has gone from last man on the bench to overnight NBA star. “Guess where I am? What’s happening Jeremy Lin?” he tweeted apparently from a courtside seat at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night where he snapped the photo of Lin in action against the Atlanta Hawks.  Justin went on to wonder if he was wearing the only pair of cowboy […]

(CHARLESTON, W.Va.) — The state of West Virginia Thursday released what is expected to be the final report on the investigation into the Upper Big Branch mine explosion that killed 29 people in April 2010.   The report, like three others, says a methane explosion at the mine was exacerbated by coal dust.  Massey Energy — owner of the Upper Big Branch mine — favored production over safety and failed to properly rock dust the mine, according to the report. The state issued 253 citations against the coal company. Those violations were for improper ventilation, equipment problems, and personnel issues pertaining […]

Bradley Manning Arraigned, Defers Entering Plea

(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) — Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, accused of providing hundreds of thousands of classified military documents and State Department cables to online publisher WikiLeaks, deferred entering a plea at his arraignment Thursday. Sitting in the Ft. Meade, Md., courtroom in his dress Army greens and signature black-rimmed glasses, Manning had his civilian counsel, David Coombs, and his assigned military counsel by his side. Although Manning sat in the same chair and courtroom as he did throughout his December pre-trial Article 32 hearing, this is the first time he has sat before a military judge, facing a court-martial. When Manning […]
