(TACOMA, Wash.) — The individual suspected of fatally shooting a police officer in Tacoma, Washington, was killed Thursday morning following an hours-long standoff with police, officials said.

The police officer was shot several times in the line of duty Wednesday around 4 p.m. local time while responding to a domestic disturbance, according to ABC affiliate KOMO in Seattle. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died. Officers had called for backup shortly after responding to the disturbance and quickly reported shots fired, the Tacoma Police Department told KOMO.

A law enforcement helicopter, patrol cars and officers from multiple state and local agencies responded to the shooting and surrounded the home, where police said the suspect barricaded himself with a rifle.

The tense standoff ended this morning around 3:30 a.m. local time after the suspect was killed. Two children who were inside the home at the time have been removed, according to Det. Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Troyer did not provide details on what led to the shooting, but he said no other police officers were harmed and the neighborhood is now safe.
