(OKLAHOMA CITY) — One person was shot at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Tuesday, the Oklahoma City Police Department announced on Twitter. The victim later succumbed to his injuries, authorities said.

The Oklahoma Police Department has identified the victim as Michael Winchester, 52, an employee of Southwest Airlines.

A suspect was later found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. Airport operations have now been resumed.

Southwest Airlines confirmed that one of its employees had died in a statement, saying, “It is with great sorrow that Southwest Airlines confirms that a Southwest Employee who was injured during a shooting incident today at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City has died from injuries. We continue to work with the local authorities investigating this incident.”

Local authorities initially announced on Twitter that the airport was shut down, and advised people inside to “shelter in place.” Police later announced in a news conference that they were formulating a plan to evacuate the airport.

Captain Paco Balderrama, the public information officer for the Oklahoma City Police Department, said his department had received “reports of shots fired in the parking lot area of Will Rogers World Airport.”

“At this point in time we’ve located one victim, and we are looking for a second reported victim,” Balderrama told reporters this afternoon. “We do not have any information to put out in terms of a suspect vehicle, or a suspect itself, but gun shots were heard.”

“We’re really asking for everybody to stay away from the airport area. All the streets are blocked off,” he added.

We have closed Will Rogers Airport at this time. If you are inside of the airport, shelter in place until advised otherwise.
