(NEW YORK) —  Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting early Saturday morning outside Caesars Casino in Atlantic City that left a police officer in critical condition, and another suspect dead.

Acting Atlantic City Prosecutor Diane Ruberton says 19-year-old Martell Chisholm of Millville, New Jersey, and 28-year-old Demetrius Cross of Bridgeton, New Jersey, each are charged with two counts of attempted murder, robbery and weapons offenses. The dead suspect is identified as 25-year-old Jerome Damon of Camden, New Jersey.

The arrests comes after two uniformed Atlantic City police officers on patrol observed a robbery in progress being committed near the Caesars Atlantic City parking garage at 2:34 a.m. Saturday, Ruberton said.

The officers observed a group of 6 males. As one Atlantic City police officer exited the vehicle he was shot and injured. The second police officer returned fire, hitting one suspect, who fled the scene. All other persons involved in the robbery also fled the scene in different directions. The suspect who had been shot was located approximately one-and-a-half blocks away, collapsed and deceased, Ruberton said.

The injured officer was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. His identity was not released.

Ruberton said the 5 persons of interest sought by law enforcement have been located and identified.
