The rocket was not scheduled for launch Thursday, SpaceX said. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

The Brevard County Emergency Operations Command says there is no threat to the public from the incident.

The Kennedy Space Center website says a launch was scheduled for Saturday morning, involving the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The launch was to carry a communications satellite for Spacecom of Israel.

This is a developing story.
