The officer was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where police superintendent Eddie Johnson later provided an update on the officer’s condition.
The shooting occurred in the city’s Near South Side neighborhood.
Johnson said the officer suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and his injuries are not life-threatening.
According to Johnson, the officer and his partner approached a man talking on a cell phone and requested that he hang up so they could talk to him. The man then pulled a gun out of his backpack and opened fire. Multiple officers returned fire, Johnson said, shooting and killing the suspect.
It was not immediately clear whether the suspect died at the scene or en route to a hospital.
“It’s another example of too many guns, too many people willing to use them,” Johnson said at a Thursday night press conference. “But it also demonstrates how Chicago police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep people safe.”
