(CHICAGO) — At least eight people were killed and 36 others were wounded in a string of shootings across Chicago over the weekend, police told ABC News Monday.

The violence erupted between 8 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday. Among those shot was a 5-year-old girl, a Chicago Police Department spokesperson said.

The young girl was on a sidewalk with a 34-year-old woman in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side on Friday night when someone emerged from an alley and opened fire. The girl was hit in the foot and the woman was struck in her left ankle, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Although wounded, the woman drove them to a nearby hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police told the Sun-Times. The girl was transferred to another hospital in good condition. It was not immediately clear if they were the targets of the shooting.

But the surge of violence in the Windy City was overshadowed by the carnage from the shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub, which left 50 people dead and 53 others injured, making it the worst mass shooting in U.S. history and the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001. Officials are investigating the tragedy at Pulse nightclub as a domestic terrorism incident.
