(WASHINGTON) — It’s been a century since President Woodrow Wilson officially created the National Park Service.

Today, it includes 411 protected areas — including 59 national parks — encompassing 84 million acres, an area twice the size of Florida or nearly 4,000 times the size of Manhattan. From Yellowstone’s gushing geysers to the stunning Grand Canyon, volcanoes in Hawaii, frozen waterfalls in Michigan, and the roaring Niagara Falls, it’s an awesome land of extremes.

Last year, the parks were visited by more than 300 million people, and they have attracted families for decades.
