(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) — A Palm Beach Zoo employee was killed Friday after she was attacked by a tiger.

Officials are investigating why the 13-year-old animal mauled the 38-year-old zookeeper in an enclosure not visible to the public.

According to Palm Beach Zoo representative Naki Carter, the zookeeper was devoted to the tigers at the zoo.

“She is someone that absolutely loved everything that had to do with keeping these tigers, and seeing that they were enriched daily,” Carter told ABC News.

ABC News affiliate WPBF-TV reports that officials do not yet know what happened, but the attack took place in an area designed to keep handlers separate from the tigers.
