As Chris Stapleton has accumulated multiple CMA and Grammy wins over the past few months and delivered an equal number of critically acclaimed performances, one person has been with him at every turn — his wife and harmony singer Morgane. Now the two are undergoing something of a role reversal, as Morgane takes the lead vocal and Chris sings backgrounds on a new track from the forthcoming Southern Family concept album.
For the couple, the Jimmie Davis classic “You Are My Sunshine” is more than just a song. Morgane actually had the lyric engraved inside Chris’s wedding band before she gave it to him. Still, she admits it’s her Traveller husband who is largely to thank for reinventing the country standard.
“I always feel like if you’re going to cover a song you should make it your own, flip it on its head a little bit,” he asserts.
Morgane jokes that Chris typically lives up to that goal. “Chris is a master at — and I say this with all due respect — messing things up,” she says, prompting a big laugh. “You know he can take something so recognizable and turn it into something totally different, where it’s almost unrecognizable, in the best way possible,” she adds.
Southern Family, which also includes contributions from Miranda Lambert, her beau Anderson East, Zac Brown and more, is due out March 18.
