(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — A lockdown was lifted and operations were back to normal at Fort Eustis near Newport News, Virginia, today after reports of shots being fired there, the base said.
The incident was not believed to be an active shooter situation.
“Shots were fired outside building 650 at Fort Eustis at 11:30 a.m.,” the base said earlier in a statement. “But at this time we are not investigating it as an active shooter incident. Security forces are on the scene and there are no reports of casualties.”
They later said there were reports of shots fired. Further details were not immediately available.
Joint Base Langley-Eustis then tweeted just before 1 p.m that the lockdown was lifted and Fort Eustis resumed normal operations, but “the cause of the incident is currently under investigation.”
