(PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa.) — Punxsutawney Phil says Americans should put away their coats and that an early spring is on the way.

The Pennsylvania groundhog did not see his shadow when he emerged from his home on Tuesday morning. According to legend, that means an early spring is coming.

“There is no shadow to be cast! An early spring is my forecast!” a member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club read from a proclamation that Phil pointed to Tuesday morning.

Had Punxsutawney Phil seen his shadow Tuesday, legend says that would have signaled six more weeks of winter.

Punxsutawney, the Pennsylvania town that is home to one of the most famous weather-predicting groundhogs, Punxsutawney Phil, has been carrying on the tradition of Groundhog Day since the 1800s, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
