(SALT LAKE CITY) — An 18-year veteran police officer is dead and another officer is injured after a shooting followed a serious car crash in the Salt Lake City-area on Sunday morning, officials said.
A suspect in the shooting is also dead, according to officials.
When officers responded to what appeared to be a very serious car accident, a man and a woman, who were in one of the damaged cars, fled on foot, Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said Sunday.
Moments later, Officer Doug Barney encountered the suspect, who fired multiple rounds at Barney, striking him in the head, Winder said. Barney died from his injuries, Winder said.
Less than three minutes later, when officers encountered a man walking near the car accident and shooting, another officer was shot multiple times. That officer survived and his condition is improving, Winder said.
A suspect, Cory Lee Henderson, was killed during the incident, Winder said. Henderson was wanted both locally by the Metro Gang Unit and federally, Winder said.
The woman allegedly with him is being sought as a person of interest, Winder said.
