(GENESEO, N.Y.) — Three are dead in a double murder-suicide near a university in upstate New York days before the start of the spring semester.

The Geneseo Police Department reported that three people had died on Sunday in off-campus housing near the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Police said former SUNY Geneseo student Colin Kingston, 24, committed suicide after he fatally stabbed former girlfriend Kelsey Annese and Matthew Hutchinson, a man she was with at the time.

Before committing suicide, police said Kingston called his father Sunday morning saying he had killed his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend. Kingston’s father called police who discovered the three bodies in Annese’s bedroom.

According to Geneseo police officer Jeffrey Szczesniak, Kingston was “distraught” over the recent breakup and had “made some suicidal comments to several people and that, but no actual threats to harm Miss Annese or anybody else.”

“We are confident that the perpetrator in this situation was Mr. Kingston and that he was not, there was no co-conspirators or anybody else that we’re looking for, so therefore there would be no charges,” Szczesniak said on Monday.

Annese was a senior Education/Spanish major at SUNY Geneseo who was a member of the women’s basketball team. Hutchinson was also a senior at the school with a major in Geography and volunteered with the Geneseo fire department.
