(ROSEBURG, Ore.) — The gunman in the Umpqua Community College massacre was identified Thursday evening as Chris Harper Mercer, 26, according to three law enforcement sources briefed on the case.
According to the law enforcement sources, authorities were dispatched to the residences of Mercer’s family members to conduct interviews and gather evidence.
Ian Mercer, the suspected shooter’s father, briefly spoke to reporters outside of his home Thursday, calling the situation a “devastating day for me and my family.”
The gunman opened fire at the school, in Roseburg, Oregon, just before 10:40 a.m., leaving 10 dead and at least seven others injured, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Police responded and engaged the shooter in a gun battle, killing him. It was not clear if the gunman was counted among the 10 dead.
The motive for the shooting, which drew an emotional response from President Obama, was not known, but investigators were poring over messages the suspected gunman behind. Law enforcement sources said that four guns, including an AR-style rifle were found at the scene.
