(PHILIPPI, W. Va.) — Police say a suspect is in custody following a hostage situation at a West Virginia high school on Tuesday.
A press release from the West Virginia State Police said that a 14-year-old male student with a pistol had held “numerous students and a teacher hostage” in a second-floor classroom. Students in other classrooms were evacuated to the school’s football field and released.
The suspect agreed to let the hostages go following initial negotiations, and later agreed to put the gun down and surrender.
The student was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Charges will be considered after his release.
State police were unsure as to the suspect’s motive.
Earlier, the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office said only that police and emergency medical services were at the scene of Phillip Barbour High School.
