(LAKE CHARLES, La.) — Louisiana State Police Senior Trooper Steven J. Vincent has died, one day after he was critically injured in a shooting at a traffic stop Sunday, officials said.

“I am very saddened to report that Senior Trooper Steven Vincent has passed away this morning from the gunshot wounds he suffered yesterday in conjunction with a traffic investigation,” Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said in a statement Monday. “As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death.”

Vincent served the Lake Charles community in Troop D since December 2003, the state police said.
