(FOLSOM, Calif.) — A Northern California prison riot leaves an inmate dead.

According to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, administrators are investigating the cause of a multi-inmate riot Wednesday afternoon at the California State Prison-Sacramento that led to a prisoner being killed.

Guards reportedly had to use pepper spray and fire two warning shots from a rifle to break up the fight. So far, no word on what sparked the riot.

The statement said numerous others were injured and five had stab wounds, but no staff were injured.

The prison currently houses about 2,300 “general population inmates,” noted in the statement.
