(NEW YORK) — Drones are everywhere, at least according to the latest report from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Pilots have reported spotting 650 unmanned aircraft already in 2015, a distressingly high number compared to the 238 reports the FAA received all of last year. The government agency notes how dangerous it is to operate a drone near airplanes and helicopters, noting as well that such activity is illegal.
The FAA specifically noted a handful of incidents in which firefighters battling wildfires in the western part of the country have been forced to pause operations after spotting drones nearby.
More than 250 reports of drones flying at heights of up to 10,000 feet above the ground were made in just the months of June and July.
The FAA will work with industry partners and law enforcement, it says, to educate drone users about rules their activity is subject to and to investigate unauthorized drone usage.
