(CENTENNIAL, Colo.) — The jury in the James Holmes murder trial began deliberations on Thursday, but hadn’t come to a decision as of Friday afternoon.

The jury had been instructed to arrive at 3 p.m. on Thursday, giving the judge and the attorneys time to agree on jury instructions. Once the jury was let in, they heard closing arguments from both sides. The judge then told them that their decision in this case was likely the most important decision they would make in their lives.

At about 8:30 p.m. ET, the jury went home for the night, and returned to deliberate at 10:30 a.m. ET Friday.

The judge told the jury of nine women and three men that they can take as long as they need, and there is no pressure for a quick verdict.

Holmes, having already been found guilty on all 165 counts related to the 2012 shooting that left 12 dead and 70 more injured, will either be sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty. Last week, the jury decided not to remove the death penalty as an option.
