(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) –A gunman who also had a hatchet was killed by law enforcement at a movie theater in the Nashville, Tennessee area, police said.
A local official said that the man had a gun and a hatchet as well as two backpacks. He was also wearing what appeared to be a surgical mask.
The suspect, identified only as a 51-year-old local white man, was wearing one of the bags when he was shot inside the theater. Another bag was left behind and both were being searched by law enforcement.
Don Aaron, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson said that the incident took place during a showing of Mad Max: Fury Road. There were approximately 20 people inside the theater, Aaron estimated.
Aaron said an officer approached the gunman from the back of the theater when the suspect opened fire. The officer returned fire and backed out of the theater.
A SWAT team then responded to the scene, firing on the gunman, who was killed within the theater.
The suspect also doused people with pepper spray, which a Fire Department official says resulted in three people being treated for minor injuries.
