(MIDDLESEX, N.C.) — A drag race in Middlesex, North Carolina Sunday night left four people dead and at least three others injured, ABC News affiliate WTVD-TV reports.

The incident happened around 11 p.m., when one of the two vehicles lost control and struck a group of people gathered to see the race, witnesses told WTVD.

The driver of that vehicle, identified as Jimmy Pearce II, 37, is in custody. He has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, according to WTVD, and another charge is pending.

The driver of the second vehicle fled the scene.
