(WASHINGTON) — Same-sex couples will now be able to receive federal marriage benefits.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday. The announcement comes just weeks after the Supreme Court’s historic decision to make same-sex marriage legal nationwide.
“I am proud to annuonce that the critical programs for veterens and elderly and disabled Americans, which previously could not give effect to the marriages of couples living in states that did not recognize those marriages, will now provide federal recognition for all marriages nationwide,” Lynch said in the release.
She also said that the administration will work to “fulfill our commitment to equal treatment for all Americans, including equal access to the benefits of marriage that the Obergefell decision guarantees.”
