(NEW ORLEANS) — Police are investigating after a New Orleans police officer was fatally shot while transporting a man to prison.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, Officer Daryle Holloway, 45, was taking the suspect, Travis Boys to prison following an arrest for aggravated battery and outstanding warrants. During the trip from NOPD to Orleans Parish Prison, Boys allegedly shot Holloway from within the vehicle, though it was unclear how he came to be in possession of a weapon.
Holloway was not the arresting officer, the NOPD said in a press release.
After the gunshot, the vehicle crashed, at which point Boys is believed to have fled the scene. A manhunt is on for his capture.
NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison called Saturday “a tragic and sad day for our police department and for the city of New Orleans.”
