(NEW YORK) — A New York City police officer shot and critically wounded an apparently delusional man Wednesday who was wanted in a series of hammer attacks in Manhattan.
A video shows two cops following David Baril at 37th Street and Eighth Avenue when the man suddenly lunges at a female officer, striking her several times with a hammer. At that point, Officer Geraldo Casaigne fired his gun at Baril, hitting him three times.
Baril, 30, was brought to Bellevue Hospital Center where he is in critical but stable condition. The officer who was attacked suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
The incident occurred just two days after Baril reportedly hit four women with a hammer in midtown Manhattan and Union Square.
Diagnosed with paranoia and schizophrenia, Baril has been arrested eight times. He recently missed a court date in the Bronx in which he was charged with attacking a worker at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.
