(NEW YORK) — Another victim of the 9/11 attacks has been identified, authorities said on Thursday, after retesting of DNA reference samples from remains recovered during the initial recovery effort.
The victim, Matthew David Yarnell, was 26 at the time of the attacks. He is the 1,640th person to be identified. More than 1,000 of the 2,753 people reported missing in the aftermath of the attacks have still not been identified.
The initial recovery effort lasted from September 2001 into 2002. In March 2013, New York City agencies announced they would begin sifting through debris recovered from the area near the World Trade Center since 2010. Since 2006, there have been 40 new identifications.
The office has vowed to continue DNA testing “until all recovered remains that can be matched with a victim are identified.”
