(NEW YORK) — Houston police searched a condo owned by Robert Durst on Tuesday night, around the same time as the real estate scion was sent to a facility that is equipped to deal with the “mentally ill.”
FBI investigators were aware that Durst was at home in Houston before he left for New Orleans — where he was arrested over the weekend.
On Tuesday night, Durst was moved to Elayn Hunt Correction Center from the Orleans Parish prison campus. The Hunt facility is equipped to handle mental health issues. The Louisiana State Appeals Court’s Fourth Circuit ruled that a lower court had “abused its discretion” in a decision keeping Durst in the Orleans Parish facility and delaying his transfer to the Elayn Hunt facility.
In court on Tuesday, Durst’s legal team said he suffers from mild Asperger’s. That condition was also raised as an issue by Durst’s attorney in his 2003 murder trial.
Durst, whose wife went missing in 1982 and friend Susan Berman was found dead in her apartment on Christmas Eve in 2000, has already admitted to killing one person, his neighbor Morris Black, but was acquitted by a jury because he testified that he had done so in self-defense. He was the subject of a just-concluded documentary series on HBO titled The Jinx.
