(ATLANTA) — A police chief in Georgia says he accidentally shot his wife in their home early on New Year’s Day.
Peachtree City chief of police William McCollom called 911 after 4 a.m. on Thursday and said he shot his wife in their home by accident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation told ABC affiliate WSB.
His wife Margaret McCollom is in critical condition at Atlanta Medical Center, according to District Attorney Scott Ballard. He said that she is expected to undergo surgery today.
Ballard would not specify how many shots were fired, noting that the crime scene will take time to be processed.
McCollom has been placed on administrative leave and an internal review is underway.
