(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Columbus, Ohio, police say a body found in a residential area near the Ohio State University campus is that of Kosta Karageorge, the Ohio State University football player who had been missing since Wednesday, police said Sunday.
Columbus police said that Karageorge’s body was found inside a dumpster along with a handgun. He is believed to have died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say Karageorge was identified by his tattoos.
Karageorge, 22, was an OSU wrestler and football player who had not been seen since he left his apartment at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The Columbus Dispatch reported that Karageorge had texted his mother Wednesday night mentioning concussions having taken their toll on his head.
The OSU Athletics Department released a statement saying that they were “shocked and saddened to learn today of the death of student-athlete Kosta Karageorge, a senior from Columbus.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Karageorge family, and those who knew him, during this most difficult time,” the statement concluded.
