(TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla.) — The U.S. Coast Guard and officials from Tyndall Air Force Base are conducting a search into a F-16 fighter jet that disappeared after losing communication with the base on Thursday morning.
A news release from the base noted that the plane was assigned to the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group and had been performing a “routine training mission” over the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday morning. The base lost contact with the pilot at about 9:15 a.m.
“The rescue of our Airman is our top priority,” Col. Mark O’Laughlin said. “We want to assure the family and friends of the missing pilot that we are doing everything we can for this effort.”
The Coast Guard said that one person was aboard the plane at the time it disappeared.
