(SONOMA COUNTY, Calif.) — California coast guard officials were investigating how a boat capsized off the coast of Sonoma County Saturday morning, leaving four people dead. One person survived the accident.
It is possible that the boat succumbed to a strong wave, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Greg Miller told ABC News affiliate KGO.
The Coast Guard responded to a distress call from Bodega Bay at 10 a.m. on Saturday and recovered four bodies in the water. They found a fifth person hanging on to nearby rocks.
That person was rescued by helicopter and taken to safety. He suffered minor injuries and is respected to recover, Miller said.
It is possible that the boaters intended to go crabbing, Miller said. Saturday marked the opening weekend of crab season on Bodega Bay.
The cause of the accident remains unknown. The identities of the four people who were killed had not been released as of Saturday afternoon.
