(NEW YORK) — The New York Police Department released a new video on Monday of an incident in which a man popped up from a subway grate and threw a smoke canister into an outdoor seating area.
No one was injured in the incident. Police said on Monday that the suspect is believed to have entered a subway station and walked through the tunnel to the grate. Detectives continue to search to try to find his point of entry, which they believe will also be his point of exit.
The hatches are important for public and subway rider safety — they allow for first responders to get into subway tunnels for rescues and for evacuating subway riders or personnel in emergencies.
