(WASHINGTON) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a 35-foot buffer zone outside abortion clinics in Massachusetts violates free speech.
Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for a unanimous court, says Massachusetts cannot establish a protest-free zone around the entrance to abortion clinics. He calls it an “extreme step of closing a substantial portion of a traditional public forum to all speakers.”
Roberts — and the liberals on the court — say the First Amendment was written to protect pamphleteering — just what protesters do, in trying to convince women not to go through with abortions.
