(WISNER, Neb.) — At least one tornado struck northeast Nebraska on Monday evening, injuring at least 16 and killing at least one.

Larry Bockelman, mayor of Wisner, Neb., told ABC News on Monday that he was urging residents to take shelter. “People like to watch things coming like this,” he said, adding that “there’s no need to watch it. Take shelter, be prepared.”

Gov. Dave Heineman declared a state of emergency on Monday night.

Much of the damage was centered on the town of Pilger, Neb., about 100 miles northwest of Omaha.

Capt. Lyle Lutte of the Norfolk Fire Department, which was asked for assistance by the fire departments in Pilger and Stanton, Neb., said the tornado caused significant damage.

At least two counties in Iowa — Dakota and Dixon counties — remained under tornado watches until at least 10 p.m. CDT on Monday.
