(BOISE) — The father of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl spoke at Idaho National Guard headquarters in Boise on Sunday about his son’s release from captivity.

“Bowe has been gone for so long that it’s going to be very difficult to come back,” Bob Bergdahl said. Bergdahl’s family is “focused on Bowe’s recovery,” Bob said, likening his return to America to a diver coming to the surface from a deep dive. The diver must “stage back up through decompression to get the nitrogen bubbles out of his system…if he comes up too fast, it could kill him.”

Neither Bob Bergdahl nor his wife Jani were interested in setting timetables for Bowe’s return to his home in Idaho. “Give yourself all of the time you need to recover and decompress,” Jani Bergdahl said. The parents revealed that they had not yet spoken to their son since his release from captivity.

Jani Bergdahl, speaking at the Idaho National Guard headquarters on Sunday, revealed what she would say to her son. “I imagine you are more patient and compassionate than ever…you are free, freedom is yours,” she said. “I will see you soon, my beloved son.”
