(DOSWELL, Va.) — Officials are searching for possible wreckage after a hot air balloon struck a power line and caught fire in Doswell, Va. on Friday night.
According to ABC’s Richmond, Va. affiliate WRIC, a hot air balloon, possibly scheduled to be involved in the Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival at the Meadow on Saturday, struck a power line on Friday night. WRIC reports that the balloon then caught fire and ascended into the air.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said at a Friday night press conference that they had “not located any wreckage.” She added that authorities “are confident that there definitely was the one pilot on the hot air balloon and there were at least two other individuals on there.”
Geller said that witnesses had told police that the gondola portion of the balloon had caught fire, though police were still working to confirm the circumstances of the incident.
The remainder of the festival was cancelled on Friday night.
