Toby Keith was surprised with the Spirit of the USO Award on Monday night in Las Vegas. The presentation happened at the end of the taping for the upcoming TV special ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops.
According to The Tennessean, Toby just finished performing the final song of the night, “American Soldier,” when military personnel took the stage and made the announcement. The honor recognizes Toby for playing more than 200 shows for more than 250,000 men and women in uniform and their families in the past decade.
Toby admits the award caught him off-guard. He says, “I saw a need and a void the great Bob Hope left behind, and no one was filling it, but as hard as Big Dog Daddy tried, I couldn’t bring Marilyn Monroe.”
Toby will be featured in ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops, airing May 20 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
