(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) — Albuquerque police say that an officer was involved in a fatal shooting on Tuesday night.
According to ABC’s Albuquerque affiliate, KOAT, the Albuquerque Police Department received a report of a hostage situation at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday. Witnesses said a man had a child at gunpoint.
Officers attempted to talk the suspect down, but during the negotiation the suspect fired at police, prompting the officers to fire back. The suspect was shot, and later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the Tuesday incident marks the 23rd person shot and killed by Albuquerque police since 2010. KOAT said that the U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating the APD for their high rate of officer-involved shootings.
