(SALT LAKE CITY) — A woman is in critical condition after being buried by an avalanche.

According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the woman got caught in the slide as she snow-shoed up American Fork Canyon Saturday afternoon.

The woman, a 21-year-old Brigham Young University student, had no pulse by the time emergency workers dug her out.

Sheriff’s Sergeant Spencer Cannon said that, “She had no air. She was in water as well, so you may have drowning concerns as well, but the good thing is that sometimes when they’re buried in snow, their body gets so cold that they’re able to bring them back and get life signs.”

Cannon says the woman was buried for a total of 40 minutes.
