(TAMPA, Fla.) — Five are dead after a head-on car crash in Tampa on Sunday.
The driver of an SUV heading south in northbound lanes on I-275 died when his vehicle burst into flames after it hit another car.
Four victims in the second car, all young men 20 to 21-years-old, also died on impact.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Gaskins says his officers were rocked by the gruesome scene.
“Five in one crash like this, you know very severe, and it plays havoc the psyche of the responders who have to take care of the scene,” Gaskins said. “Typically the fatal crashes that we investigate involve one, maybe two fatalities so whenever you have multiple fatalities, it of course is very sad.”
Police have not yet identified the victims.
Toxicology tests are pending.
