(NEW YORK) — The annual sale of Girl Scout cookies has begun, but controversy surrounds this year’s launch.

Various anti-abortion groups, including Pro-Life Wisconsin, object to the Girl Scouts of the USA’s perceived support of Planned Parenthood and such abortion rights advocates as Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Texas state Senator Wendy Davis, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.

The groups are asking its supporters to boycott Girl Scout cookies even as Pro-Life Wisconsin points to the “wholesome” activities of some local chapters.

Pro-Life Wisconsin says in a letter to its supporters that Girl Scouts of the USA “promotes radically, anti-life women…and encourages girls to fight for abortion on demand.”

However, Christy Gibbs, a spokeswoman for a regional body that provides Girl Scouting in south Wisconsin, argues that Pro-Life Wisconsin is wrong when it says that a portion of cookie sales proceeds go to the national organization.

Regional councils provide Girl Scouts of the USA a portion of its funding through registration fees, according to Gibbs, not cookie sales.
