(ORANGEBURG, S.C.) — A South Carolina State University student has died after being shot in an on-campus dormitory, police said.

South Carolina State University Campus Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said authorities are searching for four suspects who left campus after the shooting.

The student’s name has not been released. Descriptions of the suspects have not been released.

An alert was sent to students about one hour after the shooting at which point Clarkson said the campus was placed on lockdown.

Clarkson said the campus perimeter was secured in the event the suspects tried to return. He assured parents that students were safe on campus.

The 3,200-student historically black college is located in Orangeburg, about 40 miles south of Columbia, S.C.
