(MICHIGAN CITY, Ind.) — Three people were killed and more than 20 injured Thursday in a massive pile-up on I-94 near Michigan City, Indiana.

State police say 46 vehicles, including more than a dozen semis, were involved.

Tow trucks and heavy equipment responded to the collision scene as emergency crews launched a desperate rescue operation to protect survivors from the extreme cold.  State police say at least a handful of drivers had to be cut from their vehicles, while others walked away from the wreckage with non-life threatening injuries.
