(ORANGEBURG, S.C.) — Officials at South Carolina State University said one student was injured in a shooting outside an on-campus dormitory.

South Carolina State University Campus Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said authorities are searching for four suspects who made it off campus after the shooting.

The injured student’s name and condition were not released. Descriptions of the suspects have not been released.

An alert was sent to students about one hour after the shooting at which point Clarkson said the campus was placed on lockdown.

Clarkson said the campus perimeter was secured in the event that the suspects tried to return. He assured parents that students were safe on campus.

The 3,200-student historically black college is located in Orangeburg, about 40 miles south of Columbia, S.C.
