(NEW YORK) — Millions of Americans are battling frigid temperatures on Friday but the worst of the brutal cold weather may be yet to come.
Thirty states are covered in Wind Chill Advisories and Warnings Friday morning, from Texas down to Florida and all the way up to Massachusetts.
Some of the coldest wind chills are being felt in the Midwest, with Chicago at -20 degrees and Detroit at -18. Further east, it feels up to 10 below zero from New York City to Boston and near zero down south in Atlanta.
Freeze Warnings and Winter Storm Warnings are also gripping parts of the Gulf Coast, where freezing rain, sleet and snow have been falling. Numerous accidents have been reported in Texas as a result, in and around Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Houston. Some southern Texas residents are also without power.
The unusual winter weather in the South Friday morning has prompted many schools from Corpus Christi to Louisiana to close or delay opening.
More arctic air is on the way for the weekend and into next week, bringing with it what may be the coldest air mass thus far this winter to the Midwest. And with the ice-cold temperatures, many cities from the Midwest to the Mid-South and into the Northeast may see a few inches of snow.
