(OMAHA, Neb.) — An industrial accident claimed at least two lives and injured 10 in Omaha, Neb. on Monday.
Four people are in critical condition after a fire and explosion at International Nutrition, an animal feed processing plant. Part of the building reportedly collapsed. Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said 38 employees were inside at the time of the incident.
“International Nutrition does food products typically I believe for animal consumption, vitamins and things of that nature so there is no hazardous chemicals that are involved in this incident,” Kanger said.
Crews were unable to get in and search due to dangerous conditions. Kanger said specialized teams would have to be called in to secure the building.
One woman outside the building, whose 21-year-old son works at the plant, said, “Even though you see it daily, you don’t think that it’s going to hit home and when it does, it’s a struggle so it’s what I’m going through right now. I’m just struggling with it.”
A team of counselors is being made available to family members of workers.
The cause of the accident is still unknown.
