The Grammy Awards are voted on by music industry professionals, but the music-tagging app Shazam is now predicting who’ll win based on sheer popularity, as judged by the number of times people have tagged the songs. While one might argue that popularity shouldn’t dictate the winner, last year, Shazam managed to predict the winners in three out of the four biggest categories, which is why we should pay attention to its latest projections.
According to Shazam, Taylor Swift will Best Country Album for her latest project, Red, but she’ll lose out on Album of the Year to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for The Heist.
Here’s a rundown of who the winners will be on Sunday night, based on the number of times the act and its music has been tagged on Shazam:
Record of the Year — Robin Thicke feat. T.I. and Pharrell, “Blurred Lines” — 5.4M Shazams
Album of the Year — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, “The Heist” — 11.4M Shazams
Song of the Year — Pink feat. Nate Ruess, “Just Give Me a Reason” — 4.3M Shazams
Best New Artist — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Best Country Album — Taylor Swift, Red — 4.3M Shazams
Best Rap Album — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Heist
The 56th Annual Grammy Awards broadcast live from Los Angeles on CBS Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET.
