(NEWARK, N.J.) — Four men charged in the fatal carjacking of a young lawyer at an upscale mall in New Jersey appeared in court Wednesday where they pleaded not guilty.

Hanif Thompson, Karif Ford, Basim Henry, and Kevin Roberts face murder, carjacking and other charges in the Dec. 15 killing of Dustin Friedland, who was shot in the head outside The Mall at Short Hills after helping his wife into their Range Rover.

Prosecutors believe the car was the target.

Public defenders for all four men entered not guilty pleas on their behalf and bail was continued at $2 million each.

The crime outraged the community, prosecutors said, for its “sheer senselessness.”
