Darius Rucker is flying high on the country chart again with his latest hit, “Radio,” but he there’s a good chance no one would have ever heard Darius on the airwaves if his Air Force career had taken off. Darius actually went to Air Force training school while in college, but his plans were grounded when a knee injury made him unable to fly.
“This was the ’80s,” Darius explains. “[Now], you can get your knee fixed and still be a pilot and everything.”
He adds, “I blew out my knee and didn’t go to summer school and they asked if I wanted out, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I’d like to get out.'”
Since he wasn’t busy with the Air Force, Darius had plenty of time to perform with his band, Hootie & the Blowfish. They found multi-platinum success in the mid-’90s with hits like “Hold My Hand” and “Let Her Cry.” Darius actually ran into one of his old Air Force commanders one year at the band’s annual charity golf tournament.
Darius recalls with a laugh, “I walk over to him, and I go, ‘General, it’s great to see you.’ He goes, ‘You made the right decision, son.’ It was pretty funny.”
Look for Darius to hit the road on his True Believers tour starting February 28 in Youngstown, OH with special guests Eli Young Band and David Nail.
